aka White Rose of York

Alba. An ancient rose AKA White Rose of York which can be traced back to the 15th century. The summer blooms are double, fragrant and creamy white followed by orange hips. Foliage is a pale grey-green. Always a pleasing sight when in full flower. Disease resistant and needs little pruning

NB Rosa x alba 'Semi-Plena' is also known as The White Rose of York.

Alba. Introduced to Britain by the Romans this historic rose has pure white semi-double flowers followed by attractive hips in autumn. Sweetly scented. Suitable for hedging or can be used as a small climber. A simple yet beautiful rose. AKA The White Rose of York.

NB. Rosa x alba Maxima is also known as the White Rose of York.

Rugosa. An outstanding Rose that repeats well with flowers that have an overwhelming fragrance. The blooms are clear white and semi-double. Always admired in the garden. Tolerant of poor soils and light shade. Excellent large hips in autumn. Can be used as a robust hedge. 1892.

Alba. We don't know the origin or age of this rose but we do know that is really lovely when it flowers in summer. The blooms are set on reddish stems against grey-green foliage. They are sweetly scented. softest pink, open and cupped. Red hips follow the blooms. Tolerant and hardy.

Moss. A beautiful Rose which was discovered in Switzerland in the 1820's. The clear pink blooms are sweetly scented, fully double and cupped. Flowers in summer and should be pruned after flowering. Slightly drooping habit but quite hardy all the same.

The buds are said to look like a 'cocked hat' hence the name Chapeau De Napoleon or 'Napoleon's Hat'. Not sure what the little general would think about that, mind you he did love Josephine and she in turn had a passion for roses.......

Gallica. An unusual rose that grows quite tall with strong arching branches. It bears single, deep pink simple flowers which aren't complicated at all. An attractive pale central zone highlights the prominent yellow stamens. Flowers mainly in summer. Good autumn hips and a soft fragrance

Rugosa hybrid. Large single blooms of dark pink highlighted with golden stamens appear continuously throughout the season. The blooms are very fragrant and if left uncut will produce large scarlet hips. Dark green foliage. Shows good disease resistance. AKA Hazel le Rougetel. 1988.

Moss. A typical moss rose with whiskered buds that open to quartered deep red to blackish purple blooms. Relatively small plant that has coarse foliage and lots of thorns but oh so beautiful in bloom. Fragrant and repeats well. Can be grown in a pot. 1873.

Rugosa. A rose with simple exquisite beauty. Large, delicate, single, clear pink blooms with prominent stamens and a delightful fragrance. Blooms are followed by very large red hips and the autumn colour of the whole bush is splendid. Free-flowering throughout summer. Hardy and trouble free. 1914.

The large hips of Frau Dagmar Hastrup can be used for culinary purposes.

Gallica. A very Old rose. Large Crimson semi-double flowers, striped and splashed with pinks and whites. It is hardy with few thorns and matt green foliage. A very striking rose, which is pleasantly scented. Summer flowering.
